Wet/dry sanding sheets (typically silicon carbide on waterproof paper) can be used with water or wet lubricant to achieve a finer scratch pattern and longer abrasive life. Dry sanding sheets (aluminium oxide on standard paper backing) are used without water for sanding filler, primer, and dry surfaces. For automotive clear coat preparation, wet sanding sheets in P800–P2000 are standard.
