How to Choose the Right Polishing

Polishing is the final step in achieving a flawless paint finish. After wet sanding, the right polishing compound and pad combination removes sanding marks and restores deep gloss. Choosing the correct cut level for your stage of correction is critical — using too aggressive a compound risks burning through clear coat, while too fine a polish won't remove sanding scratches efficiently.

Polishing process:

1.Compounding: Remove P1500–P2000 sanding scratches with a heavy-cut compound and firm foam or microfibre pad on a dual-action or rotary polisher
2.Polishing: Refine the surface with a medium-cut polish and medium-density foam pad to eliminate compound haze
3.Finishing: Final gloss enhancement with an ultra-fine finishing polish and soft foam pad for a mirror reflection

Pad selection guide:

Firm/cutting pads: For compounding and heavy defect removal
Medium pads: For polishing and swirl removal
Soft/finishing pads: For final gloss and jewelling

SPX polishing products are formulated for modern automotive clear coats (including water-based and high-solids) and are compatible with both rotary and dual-action polishers. All products ship Australia-wide from Melbourne.

Frequently Asked Questions — Polishing

What polishing compound should I use after wet sanding?
After wet sanding with P1500–P2000, start with a medium to heavy-cut polishing compound paired with a cutting or microfibre pad to remove the sanding scratches. Follow up with a fine polish and soft foam pad to restore gloss and clarity before applying any sealant or wax.
Can I use polishing compounds with a dual-action (DA) polisher?
Yes. Modern polishing compounds are formulated for both rotary and dual-action (random orbital) polishers. DA polishers are safer for beginners as they are less likely to burn through clear coat, while rotary polishers offer more aggressive cutting power for heavy correction work.
Do you supply polishing products for professional panel shops?
Yes. SPX supplies polishing compounds, cutting compounds, and polishing pads to professional panel shops and automotive refinishers across Australia. Wholesale pricing is available — contact us for trade account details.
